The Syrians were caught with a Lebanese driver who was reportedly taking them across the border, Xinhua news agency reported.

The driver is under investigation, while after approval from the judiciary the detainees will be transferred to the relevant authorities for possible deportation back to Syria.

The arrest comes amid Lebanese efforts to stop unauthorized infiltration from Syria.

Over the past year, the Lebanese army has reportedly foiled attempts by thousands of Syrians to enter the country.

Lebanon currently hosts the highest number of refugees per capita globally, with the government estimating that approximately 1.5 million Syrians seek asylum in the country.
