The e-rickshaw, popularly known as 'Toto' on the roads of Kolkata and surrounding areas, will be powered by lithium-ion batteries with a battery leasing model. Officials gave this information on Sunday.

Lithium-ion battery maker Neuron Energy has joined hands with Urja Mobilit to pioneer the leasing model, which till now has only been heard of in the business-to-business EV sector, he said.

CEO Pratik Kamdar said, “We are starting this journey from Bengal by offering Lithium-Ion batteries for e-rickshaws on a lease model with our financing partner Urja Mobility. We look to expand to other markets soon. But it is." Co-founder of Neuron Energy.

This will enable the e-rickshaws to move around on the streets of Kolkata with GPS-enabled lithium-ion batteries, he said.

He said, “Together, we are targeting a fleet of 50 lakh e-rickshaws across the country, of which a significant number are in this state, with the aim of replacing old lead-acid batteries in the lease model with modern, efficient and Have to replace with environmentally friendly alternatives." Said.

For users, leasing is equivalent to paying EMIs as pay-per-use without owning the property.Lithium-ion batteries are cost-effective in the long run because of durability, he said, but the entry price is still at least double that of lead ACI batteries.

Asked about safety concerns in the leasing model, the official said the batteries are equipped with GPS tracking and there is a provision to deactivate the battery pack remotely.

The transition to lithium-ion batteries is not just a technological upgrade and is a response to growing environmental concerns over lead-ASI batteries, Kamdar said.

Delhi government has already banned the use of e-rickshaws.

Under the strategic alliance, Urja Mobility will purchase batteries directly from Neuron Energy, and lease them to fleet companies and individual EV owners through a wide network of authorized distributors.“Our asset-light model promises flexibility and accessibility for electric vehicle owners. With a monthly lease rental of just Rs 4,500 and a three-year contract, we are making green transportation accessible to all,” said Panka Chopra, CEO of Urja Mobility.

West Bengal is considered to be the e-three-wheeler manufacturing hub of India with around 15 per cent share and the state's share in the total EVs produced is more than 12 per cent.

Raj Shah, co-founder of Neuron Energy, said that their secret is the ability to offer customized solutions with rapid turnaround, which has led to steady growth in sales.

Kamdar highlighted the economic aspect, noting that the price of Lithium-Io batteries has fallen from a peak of US$140 per kWh to a more affordable US$80-85, with price stability expected in the near future.
