Thiruvananthapuram, A day after the ruling Left in Kerala suffered a major setback in the Lok Sabha elections, the CPI(M) on Wednesday attempted to present a brave face by claiming that the LDF lost only one per cent vote share compared to Is. 2019 results and it was the Congress-led UDF that lost five per cent of its votes.

CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan claimed that the BJP was able to open its account in Kerala by winning the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat because the Congress had lost over 80,000 of its votes in that constituency.

He said the LDF got around 6,000 more votes in Thrissur than in 2019 and the BJP won this time by a margin of over 74,000 votes. Taking a dig at the Congress, he told reporters here, “So, you do the math.,

Govindan also dismissed the question whether the Left government in the state was in trouble after the defeat, saying, "There will be victories and defeats".

Out of 20 seats in Kerala, Congress won 14 seats and IUML won 2 seats. CPI(M), BJP, RSP and Kerala Congress won one seat each.

Admitting that the Left Front suffered a major defeat as it won only one seat, the CPI(M) state secretary said the party and the LDF will introspect and examine why they lost and regain their hold in Kerala. Will take appropriate steps to achieve this.

“We lost the 2019 Lok Sabha elections but made a strong comeback and then won the state assembly and local body elections,” he said confidently. We will do the same this time too."

Govindan said the LDF will also examine how the BJP's vote share increased in several constituencies.

On CPI(M) leader KK Shailaja's defeat in the Vadakara Lok Sabha seat, he said the Congress used communal tactics to win there and the public failed to understand it.

He also took a dig at the media, saying that their predictions about the election result went wrong as the BJP could not win enough seats to form the government on its own, while exit polls had said that they would get 350 to 400 seats.

Govindan further claimed that the media acted as an ally of the Congress and the BJP while reporting the news, despite which the LDF's vote share dropped by only one per cent.CPI(M)'s V Joy, who lost the Attingal Lok Sabha seat by a narrow margin, said people in many religious minority dominated areas voted for the Congress and this was one of the reasons for the LDF's defeat. "Despite this, we fought hard," he said.

Joy also believed that due to the votes received by Congress, BJP's vote share has increased in the state.

He also said that some Hindu votes slipped due to BJP's Hindutva campaign. “The party will investigate all this,” he said.

The LDF could not better its 2019 performance, winning just one seat on both occasions. While the CPI(M)-led alliance had won from Alappuzha in 2019, it could only manage Alathur this time.
