Dubai/Kuwait City, Gulf Kingdom: A Kuwaiti national and several foreigners were arrested on Thursday on charges of murder and causing injuries due to negligence in safety and security measures after 49 people, including 45 Indians, died in a fire in Kuwait City, Gulf kingdom.

At least 49 foreign workers were killed and 50 others were injured on Wednesday when a fire broke out in a seven-storey building in the southern city of Mangaf, where 196 migrant workers were staying.

According to the English language daily, "The Public Prosecution has mandated the temporary detention of a Kuwaiti national and several expatriates on charges of murder and injuries caused by negligence in safety and security measures following the fire incident in the Al-Mangaf area. " Arab Times reported.

The Public Prosecution has launched an investigation into the fire to determine the circumstances behind the incident and the cause of the fatal fire.

There has been no official statement on how the fire broke out or what caused it. Some local media reported that it could be a gas leak from the ground floor of the building.

The prosecution said in a statement that a special team investigated the site of the fire and visited hospitals where casualties were taken to interview the injured.

Meanwhile, Kuwait Municipality announced that the Engineering Audit and Follow-up Department in the Farwaniya Governorate has closed seven basements and issued 13 violations.

In an official statement, the municipality confirmed that efforts were underway to close non-compliant basements, the newspaper said.
