Thane, With the onset of monsoon, the Konkan Railway on Thursday said it is taking several safety measures such as round-the-clock patrolling on tracks, use of advanced communication systems and installation of flood warning systems, to effectively address rainfall. Challenges on the route.

Every year during the monsoon season, landslides and rock falls occur on the Konkan Railway route.

It said it is stepping up its preparations during the monsoon season, focusing on beefing up security measures and operational preparedness.

Some of the important measures being taken include intensive cleaning of sewage drains and meticulous inspections of railway cuttings to strengthen the network against adverse weather conditions. In recent years, specific geosafety projects have markedly reduced incidents such as rock falls and landslides, improving overall safety standards, he said.

Strategic placement of BRN mounted excavators and railway maintenance vehicles at key locations ensures quick emergency response capability, Konkan Railway added.

The operational adjustments include directives for locomotive pilots to reduce speed during heavy rain and provisions for self-propelled accident relief medical vans (ARMVs) equipped with emergency medical facilities. Advanced communication systems, including mobile phones and walkie-talkies for security personnel, along with upgraded VHF base stations at all stations, will facilitate seamless coordination during emergencies.

Technology upgrades, such as LED signs, self-registering rain gauges, and flood warning systems installed on critical bridges, improve monitoring and response capabilities. Round-the-clock control rooms in key locations ensure continuous monitoring and immediate response to operational challenges.
