Kolkata: The Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port in Kolkata will suspend all cargo and container handling operations for 12 hours from Sunday evening in view of the forecast of a cyclonic storm, officials said.

It was told that operations will remain suspended from 6 pm on Sunday to 6 am on Monday.

He said that this decision has been taken for the safety of the dock workers.

Port Chairperson Rathendra Raman held a meeting on Saturday to monitor preparations to deal with the impact of the possible cyclone. In the meeting with port officials he stressed on proactive measures and inter-departmental cooperation.

Officials said that railway operations in the port area will also be suspended during that period.

The weather office said the cyclone is likely to bring wind speed ranging from 110-120 kmph to 135 kmph along the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh on Sunday night.
