Kolkata: Despite the West Bengal government appointing senior IPS officer Manoj Kumar Verma as the new Kolkata Police chief, junior doctors on Tuesday night said they will continue their strike until all their demands are met.

The state also acceded to the demands of the doctors and removed two senior officials of the health department.

The doctors made this announcement after concluding their governing body meeting, which started around 6.30 pm and ended around 1 am on Wednesday.

"The agitation and work stoppage will continue until all our demands are met. We want fresh talks with the state government," a doctor said at a press conference.

The state government appointed Verma as the new city police commissioner, a day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a meeting with agitating junior doctors to resolve the over-a-month-long impasse over the RG Kar Hospital incident.

Director of Health Services (DHS) Debashish Halder, Director of Medical Education (DME) Kaustav Nayak and Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police's Northern Division Abhishek Gupta were also removed during the meeting, as promised by Banerjee.

Swapan Soren was appointed interim DHS, while no appointment was announced for the post of DME.

Banerjee had announced the decision to remove Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, who was under criticism for his handling of the rape and murder case of a woman doctor at RG Kar Hospital, after lengthy discussions with doctors on Monday night.
