Chandrapur/Nagpur: The forest department on Saturday tranquilised and rescued a sub-adult tiger that had killed three people in villages in Maharashtra's Chandrapur district in the past few months, an official said.

According to a release, in the last seven months the big cat attacked and killed three people in villages adjacent to Nimdhela Round.

The forest department launched a rescue operation under the supervision of Dr Jitendra Ramgaonkar, area director of Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR), and the tiger was rescued from compartment 59 of the Khadsangi forest range, the official said.

The animal was shifted to Gorewada Wildlife Rescue Center in Nagpur, he said.

TATR veterinarian Dr Ravikant Khobragade, one of the team members, said this was their 68th independent tiger capture.

Another tiger, T-53, from the Deolapar (wildlife) range in Pench Tiger Reserve (Maharashtra), injured in a territorial fight, was rescued on Friday and is being treated, another official said.

Deputy Director Dr Prabhu Nath Shukla said the department decided to save the tiger as its wound was not healing naturally.

He said the tiger had entered the abandoned old security hut in compartment number 509 of Khursapar beat of Devlapar (wildlife) range on Friday, and a rescue team reached the spot and tranquilized it.

The official said the big cat had sustained wounds between the two eyes, initial treatment was given and the animal was caged for examination.
