Agartala Asserting that his government was working to transform Tripura into a healthcare hub, Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday said kidney transplants would soon be performed at GBP Hospital and Government Medical College, Agartala .

Speaking after the inauguration of a Public Health Center (PHC) at Kanchanbari in Unakoti district, Saha said his government has already started the process of setting up seven super specialty departments at GBP Hospital and AGMC.

"There has been a persistent demand for kidney transplants at GBP Hospital. Our doctors and paramedical staff have already undergone training in renal replacement therapy at a Manipur-based hospital. Patients are also ready to undergo surgical procedures. We will soon begin with kidney transplants," he said.

"While six assistant professors have already been appointed, the process to appoint 18 professors and associate professors is underway," he added.

Currently, the hospital functions with the departments of nephrology, urology, cardiothoracic and cardiovascular.

The CM said he has already urged the Center to set up an AIIMS-like hospital in the state.

"I recently met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Health Minister JP Nadda in New Delhi and sought their help in setting up a healthcare institution similar to AIIMS in the state," he said.

He said the BJP-led government at the Center has allocated funds for the overall development of the health sector in the state.

"An amount of Rs 202 million has been sanctioned for the development of health infrastructure, Rs 200 million for an independent mother and child care institute and Rs 121 million for setting up a drug rehabilitation center at Bishramganj in the district. There is no shortage of funds for development. We want to turn the state into a health center," said Saha.
