Thiruvananthapuram, Malayalees across the world welcomed the traditional New Year, Vishu, by performing colorful rituals on Sunday, looking forward to the season of prosperity and progress.

Vishu, also celebrated as a harvest festival, falls on the first day of the Malayalam month of 'Medam'.

In traditional Hindu families, this day was marked by members waking up early in the morning and observing the auspicious "Vishukkani".

“Vishukkanni” is the practice of arranging auspicious items in brass utensils symbolizing hope and prosperity.

Reflecting the glory of the state's agricultural heritage, seasonal fruits, vegetables, rice and flowers are placed on a platter in front of the idol of the deity along with gold jewellery, clothes, coins and sacred scriptures, so that when people see them for the first time Can. The elders in the family followed the practice of gifting money to the youngsters in the form of 'Vishukkainitam'.

In the central and southern districts, households prepared a sumptuous "Vishu Sadhya" (feast), which included ethnic dishes made from seasonal produce such as cucumber, mango and jackfruit.

All the major temples in the state including Lord Krishna in Guruvayur and Lord Ayyappa in Sabarimala witnessed huge rush of devotees since morning.

President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Governor Arif Mohammad Khan and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan were among those who greeted the people.
