Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala's first pediatric liver transplant was performed at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kottayam district.

Health Minister Veena George said in a statement here on Saturday that the surgery was performed on a five-year-old child suffering from liver related diseases.

"The child's 25-year-old mother donated her liver. This is the first pediatric liver transplant in the state," he said.

Pediatric liver transplants are very rare in government hospitals, he said, adding that live surgery is a very complex procedure.

He said an expert team led by Dr RS Sindhu, head of the surgical gastro department of the hospital, carried out the complex operation.

George also congratulated the doctor and his team for performing the rare surgery.

Kottayam Medical College has started liver transplantation in the government sector for the first time in the southern state in February 2022, the statement said.
