Kochi, Kerala Police have arrested a Kochi resident for allegedly posting a poster on Facebook "expressing condolences" towards the Election Commission of India.

Police had on Friday registered a case against Kakkanad resident Mohammed Shaj (51) for sharing a poster saying "Condolences to the Election Commission" on social media on the election day.

"The case was registered yesterday and we arrested him. He was released on bail yesterday itself," police said.

The case was registered under Section 153 of the Indian Penal Code (provocation with intent to cause riot) and Section 125 of the Representation of the People Act (promoting enmity between classes in connection with an election).

The FIR states that the post was shared with the intention of promoting hatred among the society.

General elections for 20 Lok Sabha seats in Kerala were held on 26 April.
