There has been quite an uproar over the way head teachers have been forced to spend their money in the absence of timely allocation of funds for the mid-day meal scheme.

The court was told by the state government that it has allocated Rs 232 crore for the program for the current financial year and also told that it will present the details as to how the funds will be distributed to the schools.

The court said that the Mid-Day Meal Rules of the Central Government envisage a system of committees at five levels to monitor the implementation of the scheme and it is the responsibility of the heads of schools and teachers to see that the program is properly implemented. ,

It also made it clear that it was the Central and State Governments that were jointly responsible for funding the scheme.

The petitioners said that the existing funds were inadequate and many of them had to contribute money from their own pockets to carry forward the scheme.

The court will now hear this case on Wednesday.
