London, a 37-year-old engineer from Kerala who took up cycling a few years ago simply as an option to stay fit, recently completed a major long-distance challenge, covering almost 22,000 kilometers by bicycle across 30 countries, from the India to the UK, and we are now planning a similar American trip.

Fayis Asraf Ali from Kozhikode cycled for 450 days before concluding his ride on London's iconic Tower Bridge last month, camping in cities in Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Iran, Armenia, Georgia, Turkiye. , Greece, North Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium and France.

The mission of the electronics and communications engineer “Ecowheelers” in undertaking this enormous challenge is to raise awareness around a number of causes, including a green agenda to move the world towards zero carbon emissions.

"This trip has many social values ​​more than just being an adventure trip," said Ali, who arrived at his "dream destination: London's Tower Bridge" on June 1.

“Through this walk, I intend to raise awareness about fitness and healthcare, Rotary's Mission End Polio Now, promote conflict resolution and peacebuilding, 'go green' by focusing on zero emissions carbon emissions and an anti-drug message on campus through debates. and presentations with groups of students en route,” he said.

The father of two was overjoyed to see his two children, Fahzin Omar, nine, and Izin Nahel, five, waiting for him with their mother at the end of their bike tour in Kerala on Independence Day. . in August 2022.

"I am proud to be married to this wonderful man who is a loving father," said his wife, Dr. Asmin Fayis.

“He has already spoken at 24 schools, 10 colleges and three universities during the leg of his trip,” she shared.

Ali rides an American Surly Disk Trucker bike weighing around 50kg, sponsored by United Arab Emirates-based luggage and travel accessories company Para John, and Dubai-based Emirates First and Rotary International. among his supporters. He is now seeking support for a similar American cycling tour, which he hopes to hold in the coming months.

“This trip has given me tons and tons of memories and accomplishments. What I understood during my journey is that there are no limits in people's minds and souls. I received a lot of support from everyone during my trip, regardless of the country I traveled to. I stayed with families in Iran, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands and many more places,” he recalled.

The cyclist is currently undertaking several university tours and debates across the UK and hopes to encourage more cycling enthusiasts to take up similar healthy causes.
