Kochi, the first International Gen AI Conclave, organized by the Kerala government along with IBM, is a step forward in making Kerala the generative artificial intelligence hub of the country, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Thursday. when opening the event.

Addressing the massive gathering of industry leaders, policymakers and innovators, Vijayan said Gen AI-based models can play a decisive role in addressing global warming and climate change as well as health emergencies.

They can also protect and preserve the environment and improve public and mass transportation, in addition to being used for many other applications, he added.

"This is indeed a step forward in making Kerala the generative artificial intelligence hub of the country, as we explore the transformative potential of AI and its impact on our society and economy," Vijayan said.

He said Kerala has been providing platforms for emerging talents, enabling innovation and entrepreneurship, and its renowned industrial and startup ecosystem has quickly become a hotspot for leading AI companies and startups.

"The Kerala government is committed to supporting AI-based investments and fostering an enabling environment for technological advancement. We anticipate more AI-based investments to flow into the state in the coming years, further boosting our efforts to become the leading AI center". Vijayan said.

The prime minister said the conclave assumes greater importance as it is taking place at a time when generative artificial intelligence is developing rapidly and opening up endless opportunities to the world.

"As an IT and startup hub in the country, Kerala can serve as India's powerhouse for making indigenous contributions in the field of generative artificial intelligence," he said.

"Numerous AI startups in our state are pushing the boundaries of innovation," Vijayan said, adding that Kerala has a flourishing AI ecosystem, fueled by initiatives like K-DISC (Kerala Strategic Innovation and Development Council). and ASAP (Additional Skills Acquisition Programme). ), which have been instrumental in promoting innovation and entrepreneurship in emerging technologies.

"At the recent Kerala Plantation Expo, we showcased irrigation systems based on artificial intelligence and machine learning, drones for selective spraying of pesticides and other technological advances. These innovations are transforming our agricultural sector, making it more efficient and sustainable," he stated .

Vijayan said the government has also integrated AI into the education system, which will emphasize critical thinking, analytical skills and problem-solving abilities.

"Our proactive approach is also reflected in the implementation of AI-powered systems by government agencies. For example, the Department of Motor Vehicles has adopted AI to improve traffic management, demonstrating our dedication to harnessing the technology for public benefit," the prime minister said.

Vijayan called for more collective efforts to improve Malayalam in large language models (LLM) for generative AI. He said that despite strong Malayalam computing communities, many LLMs currently struggle with Malayalam, making them less useful to native speakers.

"By working together (linguists, AI experts and the community), we can build better data sets, refine algorithms and create more accurate language models. This collaboration will help LLMs better understand and use Malayalam, ensuring that everyone benefit from these technologies and that our language is preserved in the digital age," he said.

The prime minister said AI can be used to analyze data from drones, satellite images and ground sensors to collect detailed information to identify the best routes, assess environmental impacts and detect potential obstacles (perhaps during natural disasters and other cases), which which would help speed up planning. (when rescue and rehabilitation work is required, for example), among other things.

The two-day conclave will conclude on Friday.
