Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar seeking the Centre's intervention in the Kuwait fire incident in which over 40 people, including several Malayalis, lost their lives.

Vijayan described the incident as "extremely painful" and expressed grief over the loss of lives in the tragedy.

In a brief message he said some of the 40 people reportedly killed in the accident were believed to be Malayalis.

In his letter, Vijayan said he has received reports that a camp in Mangaf, Kuwait - known as the NBTC camp - has caught fire and several Indians, including some from Kerala, have lost their lives.

The CM also said that according to reports, several people have suffered serious injuries in the 'unfortunate incident'.

"I request you to remain in touch with the Kuwait government and give necessary instructions to the Indian Embassy to coordinate relief and rescue operations," Vijayan said in his letter to Jaishankar.

More than 40 people, most of them Indians, were killed in a massive fire at a building housing workers in southern Kuwait, central government officials said on Wednesday.

Kuwaiti media reported that the fire in the Al-Mangaf building was reported to Al-Ahmadi Governorate authorities at 4.30 am and that most of the deaths were caused by smoke.

Kuwaiti media said construction company NBTC Group rented the building to house more than 195 workers, most of whom were Indians from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and northern states.
