Kannur (Kerala): An assistant professor at the Central University of Kerala has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman at an amusement park in the district, police said on Tuesday.

The accused Ifthikar Ahmed B, who teaches English at the neighboring Central University of Kasaragod, was caught red-handed from the Vismaya amusement park here on Monday based on the woman's complaint.

Police said he was remanded by a local court and sent to jail.

The incident occurred when the 22-year-old complainant and his family members were spending time in the wave pool at the amusement park.

A police officer said, "Initially the woman thought the professor's behavior was a mistake. But, when he repeated the same misbehavior, she reacted against him publicly."

Based on the information received, Taliparamba police reached the park to collect details.

Police said the woman stood by her statement and lodged a complaint against Ahmed, who was soon taken into custody and his arrest later recorded.

The sections imposed on Ahmed include IPC sections 354 (outraging the dignity of women) and 354A (sexual harassment).

Police said Ahmed was already facing a similar complaint of sexual harassment by a student of Central University.

Last year, based on a case registered by the Bakel police, he was suspended from the university for some time. He recently rejoined the service after his suspension was revoked by the university.
