New Delhi: SAIL, the country's largest steel company, is keeping a close eye on imports of the commodity, company Chairman Amarendu Prakash said on Friday.

The official made the remarks while replying to a question on the impact of the US imposing heavy duties on various Chinese goods like electric vehicle batteries, steel, solar cells and aluminium.

"We are keeping a close watch on imports," Prakash said on the sidelines of the national workshop 'Forging Sustainability in Steel Sector' organized by the Steel Ministry in the national capital.

Recently, Tata Steel CEO TV Narendran had also said that there is a need to be cautious about steel imports.

According to official data, India recorded a 38 per cent rise in steel imports during the 2023-24 financial year to 8.319 million tonnes, becoming a net importer of the commodity.

Steel manufacturers are raising concerns over rising imports from some countries, mainly China, and are seeking government intervention on the issue.

Domestic players are also demanding curbs on imports and review of free trade agreements (FTAs) with several countries.
