Among those hailing from the district, considered the largest unit in the country, are Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, State Secretary M.V. Govindan, left coordinator E.P. Jayarajan.

Top leaders, including district secretary M.V. Jayarajan and former legislator P. Jayarajan, considered the most popular among the grassroots, also hail from Kannur.

Trouble began when Govindan was appointed as the new state secretary soon after the demise of current secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.

EP Jayarajan, though Govindan's senior in the party, was ignored not only for the secretary's post but also for the politburo.

He expressed his anger by staying out of Govindan's state yatra. After much persuasion, he joined the yatra, when he had already covered almost half the distance.

The business interest of his wife and son, who have considerable stakes in a luxurious Ayurveda resort, had attracted attention and it was later learned that the resort had been acquired for day-to-day management by the former BJP Union minister's company. , Rajeev Chandrasekhar. .

Yet another incident that caused great damage to the party was on the day of the Lok Sabha elections, where he revealed that BJP national leader Prakash Javadekar had gone to meet him at his son's apartment here. The revelation gave ammunition to the Congress alleging that there is a secret pact between the BJP and the CPI-M in Kerala.

MV Jayarajan was brought in to stop K. Sudhakaran but he lost by a massive margin of over one lakh votes.

Shortly after the beating of M.V. Jayarajan suffered, Manu Thomas, a popular youth party leader now ousted, pointed the finger at P. Jayarajan and his son Jain Raj, who Thomas claimed was the coordinator of the gold racket being smuggled.

Although this issue came up at the district party meeting last week, the matter was left to the state party committee to investigate.

The growth of the BJP, especially in areas considered as CPI-M party villages in Kannur, has been the biggest surprise for the CPI-M. This was evident when the party analyzed the massive beating suffered by M.V. Jayarajan suffered.

The party has been shaken as M.V. Jayarajan was able to win a minuscule majority in Vijayan's constituencies, according to party legislator K.K. Shailaja, compared to what these leaders got in the 2021 assembly polls.

Another cause for concern is that at the Kannur district party meeting to discuss the defeat of M.V. Jayarajan, Vijayan's conduct and his governing style came under scrutiny, indicating that there is something not right within the party, especially among Kannur's top-tier party leaders.

While Govindan has made it clear that serious introspection will be done, it remains to be seen how the party will be able to contain the big egos of these leaders.

Meanwhile, reports have also emerged that more fireworks can be expected as Thomas, who has now been expelled from the party, could reveal more information about some of these leaders.
