Kallakurichi (Tamil Nadu), Actor-politician Kamal Haasan on Sunday said the victims of the spurious liquor tragedy here, in which around 53 people died, were "reckless" and had "crossed their limits."

In Tamil Nadu, "substantial" liquor is available; State-run TASMAC's liquor retail outlets outnumber pharmacies, he said.

The Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder was speaking to reporters after meeting survivors of the tragedy at a hospital here.

He said, "I can't say that I don't have any sympathy towards these victims. But these victims have to understand that they have crossed their limits and they are careless. They have to be careful, they have to take care of their health." "

He added, "If that's the case, then occasional drinking, social drinking, is necessary."

"But they should understand that exceeding the limit in any form, be it sugar or anything else, is bad. And it is essentially bad...," he stressed.

The MNM chief also said, "You can't say that we will make it go away. It is there, it has to be managed properly."

He said, "Kautilya Arthashastra talks about a soul inspector called Suradaksha. So we are arranging it. Now we have to see that their (people, apparently) system is saved from alcohol."
