New Delhi: The Congress on Thursday criticized the NDA government in Bihar over the Nawada house burning incident, saying it is another proof of the "jungle raj" prevailing in the state and shows the "absolute indifference" of the government towards the Dalits and the dispossessed.

While Congress leaders put the number of burnt houses at more than 80, police said 21 houses were burnt in Nawada district.

Preliminary investigation suggested that a land dispute could be the cause of the incident that occurred at Manjhi Tola in Mufassil police station area on Wednesday night, they said.

No one was injured in the incident, they added. Ten people were arrested and a search is underway for the other accused, police said.

"The terror of goons at Mahadalit Tola in Bihar's Nawada is another proof of the jungle raj of the double-engine NDA government," Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said in a Hindi post on X.

"It is highly condemnable that around 100 Dalit houses have been burnt down, gunshots have been fired and everything belonging to poor families has been snatched away in the dead of night," Kharge said.

He alleged that the BJP and its allies' "absolute indifference" towards Dalits and the dispossessed, "criminal negligence" and encouragement of anti-social elements are now at their peak.

"Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi is silent as always, Nitish (Kumar) ji is unconcerned about his power greed and NDA allies have remained silent," he said.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said the incident of "burning more than 80 houses of Mahadalits" in Nawada, Bihar, is extremely gruesome and condemnable.

"Firing dozens of bullets and creating terror on such a large scale and leaving people homeless shows that the law and order situation in the state has completely collapsed," she said in a Hindi post on X.

"The common poor in rural areas are forced to live in the shadow of insecurity and fear," she said.

"I demand from the state government that strict action be taken against the harassers who commit such injustice and all victims be properly rehabilitated," Priyanka Gandhi said.
