Union Home Minister Amit Shah made the announcement on the X handle and also shared the gazette notification.

“The Government of India has declared 25th June as Constitution Killing Day to pay tribute to all those who faced and fought against the gross abuse of power during the Emergency and to protect the people of India from such gross abuses. Committed not to support abuse in any way. In future, of electricity,” read the government notification.

Notably, on June 25, 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, in a brazen display of dictatorship, destroyed democracy and imposed national emergency.

Over a period of almost two years, lakhs of people were put behind bars and the voice of the media was suppressed.

The Home Minister said that 'Samvidhan Massacre Day' will remember the immense contribution of all those who endured the inhuman pain of the Emergency of 1975.

The observance of “Constitution Killing Day” will help in keeping alive the eternal flame of individual liberty and defense of our democracy in every Indian. Thus dictatorial forces like Congress can be prevented from repeating those horrors,” the Home Minister said.
