New Delhi, the country's leading telecom operator Jio will increase mobile service tariffs by 12 to 27 percent from July 3 and at the same time restrict access to free and unlimited 5G services for customers, according to a company statement.

This is the first increase in tariffs for Jio mobile services after a gap of about two and a half years. Jio has over 47 million mobile subscribers accounting for about 41 per cent of the market share.

The increase occurs immediately after the spectrum auction, as anticipated by sector experts. Industry experts believe that Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea may also soon increase their mobile service tariffs.

"The introduction of new schemes is a step in the direction of promoting industry innovation and driving sustainable growth through investments in 5G and AI technology," Reliance Jio Infocomm Chairman Akash M Ambani said in the statement.

The company has increased mobile service rates on almost all plans.

The price of the lowest recharge rises to Rs 19, about 27 percent more than the Rs 15 for the 1GB data add-on pack.

The 75GB postpaid data plan will now cost Rs 449 as against Rs 399.

Jio also increased the price of the popular Rs 666 unlimited plan with 84 days validity by around 20 percent to Rs 799.

Prices of annual recharge plans will increase by 20 to 21 percent from Rs 1,559 to Rs 1,899 and from Rs 2,999 to Rs 3,599.

The increase in mid-range mobile service plans will be from 19 to 21 percent.

"Unlimited 5G data will be available on all plans 2 GB per day and above... The new plans will go into effect on July 3, 2024 and will be eligible from all existing touchpoints and channels," says the release.

As of now, subscribers using plans priced above Rs 239 can access the unlimited free 5G service and the rest of the customers have to recharge their plan with Rs 61 coupon to avail the unlimited 5G service.

Earlier, Jio had increased mobile service tariffs in December 2021 along with Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea.

Airtel had increased the entry-level mobile service plan by around 56 per cent to Rs 155 from Rs 99 earlier.

In addition to the increase in mobile service rates, Jio has introduced two apps, Jio Safe and JioTranslate, which it is offering completely free to its customers for a period of one year.

Priced at Rs 199 per month, JioSafe – Quantum Secure Communication app can be used for calls, messages, file transfers, etc.

AI-powered JioTranslate is a multilingual communication app to translate voice calls, voice messages, text and images.
