CHENNAI: Leading stainless steel maker Jindal Stainless has supplied high-strength stainless steel for the Vande Metro train to operate from July, the company said on Tuesday.

Railways recently started Vande Metro train from Integra Coach Factory in Chennai.

Jindal Stainless in a statement here today claimed that the “201LN” stainless steel supplied by Jindal Stainless makes the coaches lightweight and energy efficient.

Vande Metro trains are the short distance version of 'Vande Bharat' express trains. Vande Metro trains aim to serve passengers covering distances up to 250 kilometres.Vande Metro trains are expected to connect more than 120 cities and are likely to be launched in July.

Some of the initial routes planned are Bhubaneswar-Balasore, Agra-Mathura Chennai-Tirupati, Delhi-Rewari and Lucknow-Kanpur, the company statement said.

Jindal Stainless said that compared to conventional 'ferritic stainless steel grades, the outer panel thickness on the trains has been reduced from 3 mm to 2 mm, resulting in lighter, more energy efficient and cost-effective trains.

"Stainless steel '201LN' is highly corrosion resistant, has superior durability and exhibits superior crash-resistant properties, thereby providing best-in-class protection to passengers," the statement said.
