Ranchi: Kalpana, wife of jailed former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, on Monday filed her nomination as JMM candidate for the Gandey assembly by-election.

48-year-old Kalpana was accompanied by Chief Minister Champai Soren, brother-in-law Basant Soren, Jharkhand Congress President Rajesh Thakur and ministers Alamgi Alam and Satyanand Bhokta, among others.

The by-election on this seat is to be held on May 20 along with the parliamentary elections in the state.

The seat of Giridih district was vacant after the resignation of JMM ML Sarfaraz Ahmed.

Soon after filing her nomination, Kalpana said, "Give us one more chance, give us your blessings...this election is being held for the people of Gandeya."

When asked about the opposition India faction, he said that the alliance is strong in the state and the country. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha candidate also said that she always takes criticism constructively.

"The dictatorial forces have imprisoned Hemant ji, but how will they imprison his thoughts? He lives in the hearts of the country and the people of Jharkhand."

“We have to work for every section of the Gandey assembly – tribals and indigenous people, women, youth, farmers, children and the elderly. I request all of you to help me take Gandey on the path of progress,” she said while addressing a public meeting in Giridih.

Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on January 31 in a money laundering case related to the alleged land scam.Kalpana, a housewife with MTech and MBA qualifications, completed her schooling from Baripada in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, and obtained her engineering and MBA degrees in Bhubaneswar.

His political journey began with JMM's 51st foundation day celebrations in Giridih district on March 4, when he claimed that a conspiracy was hatched by opponents since the Hemant Soren-led coalition government came to power in 2019, and Jharkhand She will give a befitting reply to the forces that put her husband behind bars.

After the ruling JMM-led alliance proved its majority on February 5 and Heman Soren delivered a fiery speech in the assembly, Kalpana had stressed to Ax that "the fight against injustice and oppression will continue".

Speculation about Kalpana's candidature arose after the resignation of JMM's Gandey MLA Sarfaraz Ahmed in December, after the BJP claimed that it would not facilitate her candidature if the ED issued summons to her husband.

However, Hemant Soren had then dismissed the rumors of Kalpana contesting from Gandey and called it a fabricated story of BJP.
