Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], A jeweler and his son in Jaipur have been accused of duping an American woman of Rs 6 crore by selling fake jewellery, police said on Wednesday.

According to officials, the jeweler couple, identified as Rajendra Soni and Gaurav Soni, allegedly polished silver chains to look like gold and sold moissanite stones worth Rs 300 as expensive diamonds with fake certificates. Gave.

Additional DCP Bajrang Singh said that Nand Kishore, who made the fake certificate, has been arrested. Police has issued a lookout notice for the absconding jewellers.

“Both used the swindled money to buy a flat worth Rs 3 crore in Jaipur,” he said.

The matter came to light when Cherish Nortje, an American citizen, lodged a complaint at the Manak Chowk police station on May 18.

She was working with jewelers to buy gemstone jewelery for her business in the US since 2022.

In April 2024, she discovered at an American exhibition that the jewelery was fake. She came to Jaipur in May to confront the jewelers, leading to an argument.

Following the confrontation, Rajendra and Gaurav filed a complaint against Nortje, claiming that he forcibly took jewelery from their shop. However, CCTV footage shows Nortje leaving with the jewelery he had brought with him.

The police confirmed that the jewelery was fake, through a second laboratory in Sitapura and arrested Nand Kishore, who confessed to forging the certificates based on the jewellers' instructions.

The main accused Rajendra and Gaurav are still absconding and the police is searching for them.

More complaints from other foreign traders are now being investigated, officials said.
