New Delhi: BJP ally Janata Dal (United) leader KC Tyagi on Thursday said his party has sought a review of the Agneepath scheme and will pursue the issue of caste census, which he termed as the need of the hour.

Tyagi said his party's support to the BJP is "unconditional".

Tyagi told reporters here, "There is anger among voters over the Agniveer scheme (short-term army recruitment). Our party wants that the shortcomings on which people have objections should be removed."

He said that JDU is not against the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), but all stakeholders should be consulted on it.''The Chief Minister (Nitish Kumar) had written a letter to the Law Commission on UCC. We are not against UCC. Chief ministers, political parties and various communities should be consulted and a solution should be found.” Understood,” he said.

Asked whether his party would insist on a caste census, Tyagi said, "No party in the country has ruled out a caste census."Bihar has shown the way, even the Prime Minister has not opposed...it is the need of the hour and we will pursue it."

On support to the BJP as a member of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), he said, "There are no pre-conditions, there is unconditional support. But it is in our hearts and minds that Bihar should be given special status." The situation that Bihar faced after partition cannot be improved without giving it the status of special state.

The support of allies like JDU is important for BJP because BJP could not reach the majority mark on its own in the Lok Sabha elections. BJP got 240 seats, which is 32 less than the absolute majority. Among its allies, N Chandrababu Naidu's Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Nitish Kumar's JD(U) won 16 and 12 seats in Andhra Pradesh and Bihar respectively, and with other alliance partners, the NDA has 293 seats.
