New Delhi, JD(S) leader and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda's son HD Kumaraswamy has been allotted the portfolio of Union Steel Minister in the Modi 3.0 government.

Kumaraswamy will replace Jyotiraditya M Scindia, who has been allotted the Ministry of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region in the new government.

He is taking over the charge of the ministry at a time when the domestic industry is facing significant issues of rising steel imports from countries like China and rising raw material prices.

The JD(S) leader has also been given the charge of Heavy Industries Minister.

The two-time Chief Minister of Karnataka and five-time JD(S) MLA contested from Mandya Lok Sabha seat in Karnataka and won by 2,84,620 votes defeating Venkataramane Gowda (Star Chandru) of Congress in the 18th general election. He got 851881 votes, while Venkataramane Gowda got 5,67,261 votes.

Son of JD(S) patriarch and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, Kumaraswamy is the JD(S) state president. He managed to get a cabinet berth by forming an alliance with the BJP at a time when his party was fighting a "battle for survival".

The 64-year-old Vokkaliga leader wanted to become the agriculture minister.

By winning the Mandya Lok Sabha seat, the former CM not only managed to regain the lost stronghold of JD(S) but also showed that the party is still a force to be reckoned with in Karnataka by forging an alliance with the BJP.Kumaraswamy was first elected to the assembly in 2004, when the JD(S) joined the coalition government led by Congress's N Dharam Singh after returning a hung House in the elections.

In 2006, he rebelled and, reportedly against his father's wishes, citing a threat to the party, walked out of the alliance with 42 MLAs and formed a government with the BJP and in his very first term as an MLA. During this time he became the Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, Bhupathi Raju Srinivas Varma, who won from Narsapuram seat in Andhra Pradesh, has been allotted the portfolio of Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries.
