New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday said that the Jammu region "becoming the center of terror incidents" reflects the "strategic failure" of the Modi government and demanded that the Center give confidence to the country about the measures it is taking to tackle to the situation.
The opposition party also called for a befitting response from Pakistan in the wake of increasing terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Congress statement came a day after five army personnel, including a junior officer, were killed and several others injured when heavily armed terrorists ambushed a patrolling party in the remote Machedi area of J&K's Kathua district. .
Addressing a press conference at AICC headquarters here, Congress spokesperson Deepender Hooda said this attack is highly condemnable.
He said the government should give a suo motu statement on the measures it is taking in the wake of the recent terror attacks in the state.
"Even before this, in December 2023, four of our soldiers were martyred in Rajouri. There was an encounter in Kulgam, in which two of our soldiers were martyred.
"There was a terror attack in Doda on June 26. Also on June 9, a terror attack was carried out on a bus," Hooda said, listing the recent terror attacks in J&K.
Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has asserted that the solution to persistent terror attacks must be strict action, not empty promises, Hooda said.
"Figures show that the number of civilians and security force personnel martyred in terror incidents in the Jammu region has almost doubled since January 2023," he said.
The center of terror incidents has now shifted from the Kashmir Valley to the Jammu region and this "reflects the strategic failure" of the Modi government, he said.
The Modi government is not taking the land situation in J&K seriously and is instead more busy presenting its narrative to the country, he claimed.
"Every time the Modi government introduces any plan, it links it with terrorism and says that terrorism will be eradicated. When demonetisation happened in the country and Article 370 was removed in Jammu and Kashmir, even then there was talk of elimination of terrorism. But now the government should reflect on the situation that has arisen," he said.
Criticizing Pakistan for orchestrating such attacks in J&K, Hooda said the neighboring country is trying to divert the attention of its people from its own failures on unemployment and bankruptcy.
Pakistan has come to the brink of becoming a "failed state" and yet it dares to do so, Hooda said, adding that now is the time to give a befitting response to Pakistan.
"As a responsible opposition, we are with the Government for the security of the country," he stated.
