Srinagar: Police are investigating a case against a non-local medical student studying here for allegedly posting religiously sensitive material online, triggering protests, officials said on Thursday.

"Srinagar Police has taken cognizance of the incident of a student of GMC Srinagar posting sensitive material against the religious sentiments of a particular community," a police officer said.

According to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir VK Birdhi, the accused was studying at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Srinagar. He had allegedly posted against Prophet Mohammed.

Dozens of students and several junior doctors protested on the GMC campus against the student who allegedly posted a display picture on an app that many students considered blasphemous, police said.

On Wednesday, the medical college administration suspended the student pending investigation.

"Jammu and Kashmir Police is not only sensitive on all religious matters but respects all religious matters. When religious issues are related to law and order, the police becomes extra sensitive and we do not punish any person belonging to any community. Will not allow anyone's sentiments to be hurt." Birdhi told reporters here.

IGP Kashmir appealed to the people not to fall prey to false rumors and warned that if anyone is found spreading fake rumors, which may lead to law and order problem, he will face strict action.

Birdhi said, further investigation in the matter is going on.
