Srinagar: Two people have been arrested for allegedly consuming liquor during a shikara ride in Dal Lake here. The police gave this information on Tuesday.
He said that the city police took this step after a video of this incident went viral on the internet.
Drinking alcohol in public places is prohibited in Jammu and Kashmir.
"Srinagar Police has taken cognizance of a video of unidentified persons behaving in an inebriated state at a Shikara in Dal Lake went viral on social media platforms," a police spokesperson said in a post on Twitter.
He said a case was registered under relevant sections of the law and two accused were arrested.
"Two accused have been arrested while other suspects are being interrogated. Further investigation in the case is underway," he said.
Last weekend, a video showing a group of tourists drinking alcohol during a shikara ride in Dal Lake surfaced, drawing outrage from civil society and religious leaders.
