In Astana, Kazakhstan, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met UN chief Antonio Guterres on Wednesday and discussed global flashpoints and their broader implications apart from Security Council reform from the ONU.

Jaishankar, who is here to represent India at the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and to hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines, also met his counterparts from Belarus and Tajikistan, Maksim Ryzhenkov and Sirojiddin Muhriddin, respectively. .

“It is always a pleasure to meet the UN Secretary General @antonioguterres. He appreciates his ideas about the state of the world. Global flashpoints and their broader implications were discussed,” Jaishankar posted on social media platform X.

He further said that he spoke on the reform of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), preparations for the upcoming 'Future Summit' in September and future prospects for a meaningful partnership between India and the UN.

He previously held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Tajikistan, Belarus and Russia.

“I am glad to meet Tajik FM Sirojiddin Muhriddin in Astana today. He took stock of our bilateral partnership and cooperation in multilateral forums. Appreciate the exchange of views on the regional situation,” Jaishankar posted on social media platform X along with photos of the meeting.

“Delighted to meet today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, Maksim Ryzhenkov. Welcome Belarus to the SCO as its newest member. We discussed our bilateral relationship and its potential for future growth,” the Minister previously published in X.

The meeting of the two Foreign Ministers came days after the first India-Belarus Consular Dialogue held on June 28 in Minsk.

"The Indian delegation was headed by Dr. Aman Puri, JS (CPV), while the Belarusian delegation was headed by Andrei Kozhan, Head of the General Directorate of Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus," a MEA statement. .

With nine member states (India, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan), the SCO has emerged as an influential economic and security bloc and one of the largest transregional international organizations.

Belarus will be the tenth nation to join as a member.

Kazakhstan hosts the summit in its capacity as current president of the group.
