Chandigarh/Amritsar, Jailed radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh, who recently won the Khadoor Sahib parliamentary seat in Punjab, is likely to take oath as a member of the Lok Sabha on Friday.

The 'Waris Punjab De' team chief, who is currently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail in Assam along with nine associates under the National Security Act, has been granted four-day parole to allow him to take oath, officials in Amritsar said.

Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, independent MP from Faridkot, said Amritpal Singh is likely to take oath as MP on July 5.

"I went to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at his residence in Delhi on Wednesday. He said the oath will be taken on July 5," Khalsa said over the phone.

He also said that clearances and permissions have come from various quarters to allow Amritpal Singh to take oath.

"My understanding is that he will be flown from prison to take the oath, which will be in the Speaker's private chamber," he said.

Khalsa said the sole purpose of his meeting with the President on Wednesday at the latter's residence on Akbar Road in the national capital was the issue of Amritpal Singh's oath.

About parole, Amritsar deputy commissioner and district magistrate Ghamshyam Thori said: "Amritpal Singh has been granted parole for up to four days or less from July 5 with certain conditions that have been communicated to the superintendent of Dibrugarh jail".

Replying to another question on bail, Thori said in a brief statement: "...granted by the District Magistrate of Amritsar, after clearance from the Home Department."

According to Rajdev Singh Khalsa, a lawyer for Amritpal Singh who meets him in jail, said that he (Amritpal), through the superintendent of Dibrugarh jail, had recently sent a letter to the deputy commissioner of Amritsar, who in turn forwarded it to the state government for clearance needed to allow the imprisoned preacher to take oath.

A request was made for his temporary release under Article 15 of the National Security Law.

Having fought the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as an independent, Amritpal Singh won from the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat after defeating Congress candidate Kulbir Singh Zira. He won by a margin of 1,97,120 votes.

Amritpal Singh, who called himself like slain Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, was arrested from Moga's Rode village on April 23 last year after a manhunt that lasted over a month.

The Khalistan sympathizer had escaped from the police net in Jalandhar district on March 18, changing his vehicle and appearance.

The Punjab Police had launched a crackdown after the Ajnala incident on February 23 last year, in which Amritpal Singh and his supporters, some of them brandishing swords and weapons, broke barricades and stormed the police station on the outskirts from the city of Amritsar, and clashed with police to free Lovepreet Singh Toofan, one of their aides.

He and his associates were charged in several criminal cases related to spreading class discord, attempted murder, attacking police personnel and creating obstructions in the lawful performance of duty by public servants.
