Udhampur (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], A school in Udhampur has adopted rooftop farming, integrating it into its curriculum to educate students about planning development and the importance of organic produce, leading the initiative The school principal has done this in collaboration with Udhampur Agriculture. The objective of the department is to increase awareness about organic farming and advanced farming methods. The rooftop garden will serve as a hands-on learning ground for students, giving them a chance to witness first-hand the growth cycle of various plants, fruits, vegetables and even ornamental flowers. This hands-on experience will go beyond textbooks, fostering a deeper understanding of agriculture and the delicate balance of the ecosystem. School principal Vaneet Gupta said, “This is the first initiative in Jammu and Kashmir.Its objective was to spread awareness. Students learn how to make compost. Organic and inorganic farming is done here. W want to give students practical experience to improve their observation skills and analytical thinking in life. He further said that its objective was to teach advanced methods of agriculture to the students."We have 253 students who participate in this activity every day. They learn to use farm equipment here," he said. More importantly, this project emphasizes the importance of organic farming. Smriti, a student, said, “Our principal emphasized that students should acquire practical knowledge rather than just reading books. The focus is on how to use small spaces and how to eat organic food at home.The vegetables available in the market are inorganic and contain pesticides, our principal wanted us to know the difference between organic and inorganic farming. By growing fruits and vegetables free from pesticides and harmful chemicals, the school intends to inculcate a sense of awareness about healthy eating habits among the students, students are not only expected to actively participate in the rooftop garden , but also apply this experience to their own homes, by encouraging them to grow their own organic vegetables and fruits, the school hopes to spark a health revolution, one seed at a time.
