Bareilly (UP), scientists at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) here are on a mission to save an Indian flapshell turtle, whose shell was cracked after an accident.

On Wednesday, Dr. A., chief scientist and in-charge of the Wildlife Center of IVRI.

Indian flapshell turtles are listed as vulnerable in the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Wildlife Species.

"After inspecting the turtle, we found that its back (shell or cover) was broken after being run over by a vehicle. In this situation it becomes very difficult to save the turtle as the cover provides moisture and heat to it. Controls. It was necessary to cover (the shell),'' Dr. Pavde said.

He told that the tortoise shell is very hard and the broken part can be joined only by stitching.

Dr. said, "It was difficult to ortho drill the cover for stitching as the condition of the turtle was very critical. We were not able to even give sedative medicines to it due to its poor condition. In such a situation, saving the turtle became very challenging." " Pavde said.

"Initially, we tried using blouse hooks to connect the cover but did not succeed. We also tried glue and that also did not yield results. After that we used ortho glue to connect the broken parts of the shell. Tried surgical pins, but that didn't work. Later, a ring of ortho surgical pins was made and a stapler was used to join them," he said.

Dr. Pavde said that the tortoise is under observation and they are praying to God for its recovery.

Bareilly Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Deeksha Bhandari said that with her permission the injured turtle has been sent to IVRI for treatment.
