Kolkata, The Indian Tea Association (ITA) on Friday reiterated its demand for financial assistance from the Center to support the struggling Darjeeling tea industry.

According to ITA, the situation in Darjeeling is serious due to reduction in yield and fall in prices.

Without a financial relief package, the survival of the Darjeeling tea industry is in danger, the association said as it urged the government to consider and act on a financial revival package approved by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce in March 2022.

ITA said, “The association urges the government to extend the financial revival package for the Darjeeling tea sector, which has already been endorsed by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce, in March 2022. It awaits consideration and action.” Is."

Citing Tea Board data, ITA said adverse weather conditions have affected tea production in Assam and West Bengal, leading to a significant decline in production.

According to Tea Board data, from January to March 2024, production across the country declined by 13.69 million kg to 96.1 million kg. Auction prices also declined during the same period, with auction prices at the all-India level falling by R16.08 per kilogram to R128.12, ITA said.

Meanwhile, tea exports from India fell to 227.9 million kg during January to December 2023 compared to 231.08 million kg in the same period of 2022, adding to the industry's challenges, ITA said.
