Netanyahu and Burns discussed the ongoing Gaza ceasefire talks in the Egyptian capital Cairo, the source said, without specifying the time and place of the meeting, Xinhua news agency reported.

Israel's Ynet news website reported that Burns arrived in Israel after attending talks held in Doha and Cairo.

Israeli, Hamas, Qatari and US negotiators arrived in Cairo on Tuesday to discuss an Egyptian-brokered Gaza ceasefire proposal backed by Hamas.

The source said that despite Israel announcing that the proposal was not in line with its demands, its delegation remained in Cairo until Wednesday afternoon.

In a video statement released Tuesday, Netanyahu said he had instructed the Israeli delegation to "continue to hold firm on the conditions necessary for the release of Israeli hostages, (and) hold firm on the requirements necessary to ensure Israel's security ".
