The Islanders came from behind after Jason Cummings gave the Mariners the lead late in the first half. Second-half strikes from Diaz, Bipin and Vojtas ensured that the Petr Kratky-coached side leveled the score against the home side in front of a packed crowd to conclude a historic 10th season of the ISL.

Mohun Bagan Super Giants had claimed the League Winners' Shield by defeating Mumbai City FC in their last league match and the Islanders turned the tables on Saturday.

In proceedings, similar to the ISL 2020-21 final when both the teams faced off in the summit clash, a similar hero emerged as Bipi Singh struck in the 81st minute to help his men avenge the defeat. Both sides adopted a cautious approach in the opening half, focusing on holding their positions, playing to their strengths and not trying too hard for the opposition. However, Mohun Bagan Super Giant won the first match thanks to their attacking duo of Dimitrios Petratos and Cummings.

Petratos has not been afraid to test his luck from distance often in this campaign. As the opening essay of the game was coming to an end, he fired a shot that caught Mumbai City FC goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpaa off balance.The patron foiled the attempt; Cummings was like a fox in the box and he converted the chance in the 44th minute to ensure his side went into the break with the lead.

The Islanders naturally decided to change things up in the second half.
