Lucknow Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday questioned the Centre's intention behind the proposal for simultaneous elections and asked whether it is also a "jumla" (trick) like women's reservation "which will be put on hold for the future."

Yadav attacked the ruling party, saying what will happen if the BJP "overthrows" the elected government in any state, and asked if in such case elections would be held again across the country.

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the "one nation, one election" proposal, as recommended by Ram Nath Kovind's panel.

Most opposition parties have termed the proposed move as impractical and a "cheap trick" by the ruling BJP.

“When the BJP topples the elected government of any state midway through its term, will elections be held across the country again?

"If the president's rule is imposed in some state, will people have to wait for an elected government until the next general election or will there be elections again throughout the country?"

He asked if any time limit has been set for the constitutional amendments that will have to be made to implement this or if this is also just a "jumla (trick) that should be put on hold for the future, like reservation for women."

"Is this a plan to change the results by privatizing the elections? These fears arise because tomorrow the government will say that it does not have the human resources or other resources necessary to carry out elections at such a large level, that is why we are giving the job of conduct contractual elections (for our people)," Yadav said.

The BJP should first conduct such elections within its party at the district, city, state and national levels simultaneously and then talk about the entire country, he said.

Attacking the BJP, he said: "The public also asks why the election of their own national president has not been held until now, when they hear that the principle of 'one person, one opinion' prevails there."

"Is there now a fight between 'two people, two opinions' in the weakened BJP?" he added.
