New Delhi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday spoke over telephone with his Israeli counterpart Israel Katz and shared India's concerns over the situation arising out of Iran-Israel hostilities.

Iran launched its first direct attack on Israel on April 1, firing hundreds of drones and missiles in response to a suspected Israeli attack on its consulate in Damascus.

"Just concluded talks with Israeli Foreign Minister @Israel_katz. Shared our concerns over yesterday's developments. Discussed the broader regional situation. Agreed to remain in touch," Jaishankar said on 'X'.

In its response, India called for immediate de-escalation of the situation and said its embassy in the region is in close contact with the Indian community in the region.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, "We are seriously concerned by the increasing hostilities between Israel and Iran, which threaten peace and security in the region."

"We call for immediate de-escalation, restraint, retreat from violence and return to the path of diplomacy," it said.

The Ministry of External Affairs said that India is closely monitoring the emerging situation in West Asia.

"We are closely monitoring the evolving situation. Our embassies in the region are in close touch with the Indian community," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

“It is important that security and stability be maintained in the region,” I said.

Jaishankar also spoke to his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

Following Iran's attack, the Israeli military said it and its allies had intercepted most of the more than 300 drones and missiles fired by Iran.

US President Joe Biden said the US military helped Israel capture almost all drones and missiles launched by Iran.
