During a weekly press briefing in Tehran on Monday, Kanani stressed the need for technical and legal negotiations in a media discussion to determine the respective shares of the Arash gas field, which is jointly owned by Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, Xinhua news agency reported. It is called Durra.

The spokesperson claimed that the maritime boundaries between Iran and Kuwait are undefined, making it premature to discuss the allocation of resources in the region.

Kanani reiterated Iran's stance on resolving the matter through formal negotiations and called for Iran's rejection of any unilateral measures that ignore its interests.

The Durra gas field in the Gulf remains a focal point of geopolitical tension between Iran, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Saudi Arabia and Kuwait signed a development deal in March 2022 laying full claim to the area, while Iran has condemned the deal as "illegal" in contrast to earlier negotiations.
