Acting Foreign Minister of Iran Ali Bagheri Kani and Foreign Minister of Bahrain Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani met in the Iranian capital Tehran on Sunday within the framework of the two countries' historical and brotherly relations, religious and neighborly relations, shared history and mutual interests. . "At this meeting, both sides agreed to create the necessary mechanisms to launch bilateral talks to restart relations between their countries," the statement said, Xinhua news agency reported.

According to the joint statement, the meeting was held while Bahraini ministers are on a visit to Tehran at the invitation of the Iranian acting Foreign Minister to attend the 19th meeting of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) Ministerial Meeting on Monday.

Bahrain broke diplomatic ties with Iran in 2016 following Saudi Arabia's decision to break ties with Tehran. The move came in response to attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran, which followed Saudi Arabia's execution of a Shia cleric.

In March 2023, Saudi Arabia and Iran reached a landmark agreement to restore diplomatic relations and reopen their embassies and missions in China. The two countries had formally announced the resumption of diplomatic relations with immediate effect in April last year.
