The incident occurred after the first round of Iran's presidential election on June 29, resulting in the death of two security personnel and injuries to several others, Xinhua news agency quoted Iran's official news agency IRNA as saying.

The province's intelligence department arrested "terrorist" suspects on Friday, according to a statement cited by IRNA reports on Sunday. Arms, ammunition, hand grenades, two-way radios and explosive materials were seized from the suspects.

Intelligence officials, without naming the country, also claimed that the group had received instructions from their ringleaders who were based in a "neighboring country" and were planning further attacks.

Despite injuring five passengers, including law enforcement and election staff, the attackers failed to steal the ballot box. Two officers died after the attack.

Sistan and Baluchistan province, bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, has seen several terrorist incidents targeting civilians and security forces in recent years.
