FIDE said the event aims to explore the transformative power of chess as a rehabilitation tool in correctional facilities around the world.

FIDE in collaboration with the IOC is organizing the conference in Pune from June 19-21, which will be hosted by the All India Chess Federation (AICF) and Maharashtra Chess Association.

Indian Oil under its 'Parivartan-Prison to Pride' initiative facilitates training programs in various sports like Chess, Basketball, Badminton, Volleyball and Carrom to the prisoners in various Indian prisons.

The initiative aims to help and improve the physical and mental well-being of prison inmates.

According to FIDE, on the first day of the conference, participants will visit the local Yerwada prison, play chess with the prisoners and listen to presentations from prison officials.

Some of the topics to be discussed at the conference include supporting talent in prisons; Chess puzzles in prisons, and their relevance to life outside personal stories of former prisoners; Steps to implement Chess for Freedom in prisons etc.
