Initially, it was reported that only Gambhir, who is the frontrunner for the post after leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, would appear for interview before the CAC along with Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape . And Sulakshana Naik.

In the evening, BCCI sources confirmed to IANS that WV Raman also appeared for the interview virtually, Paranjpe and Sulakshana Naik joined from the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai and Malhotra joined from Delhi, where he is on commentary stint.

"Apart from Gautam Gambhir, WV Raman was also there for the interview," a top BCCI source told IANS. “The CAC will interview another candidate tomorrow who is a foreign candidate,” the source said.

The BCCI had invited applications to look for candidates for the coveted post, as incumbent Rahul Dravid did not want another stint after the T20 World Cup in the USA and Caribbean.Dravid was already on extension as his initial contract expired after the domestic ODI World Cup last year.

Gambhir appeared before the panel virtually from his home in Delhi and presented his vision and plans for the team. It was reported that he is the preferred choice of BCCI stalwarts including Secretary Jay Shah. Gambhir confirmed his candidature after the BCCI bigwigs agreed to his condition of being given a free hand to run the team like KKR. Even BCCI officials are impressed with the way Gambhir mentored the young players at KKR and helped the franchise win its third IPL title.Like Gambhir, left-handed opening batsman Raman, who had previously coached the women's team, put in an impressive performance.

The committee was greatly impressed by Raman's presentation. There is no update on who the foreign candidate is but the interviews are expected to take place on Wednesday.

Interview for selectors also

Meanwhile, the CAC will also interview candidates to fill the position of a selector for the senior men's national team.

The current committee has two candidates, with Ankola's term expiring and BCCI sources said the board would like to be replaced by someone from the North Zone to balance the regional representation.According to reports, Nikhil Chopra, Ritinder Singh Sodhi, Mithun Manhas and Kishan Mohan have applied for the sole vacancy, with Sodhi and Manhas being the frontrunners.

BCCI will also restructure the national team support staff but this matter will be taken up after the selection of the head coach as he will have a big role in the selection process. The head coach will work with the support staff and hence BCCI wants to select people of his choice.
