Lin made the comments while responding to a question regarding the incident at a regular press briefing, Xinhua news agency reported.

Four foreign teachers from Beihua University, Jilin city, in northeast China's Jilin province were attacked while visiting the city's Beishan Park on the morning of June 10, according to the spokesperson. All the injured were taken to hospital and given proper medical treatment. The condition of none of them is serious.

"The initial police assessment suggests this is an isolated incident. Further investigation is still ongoing," Lin said.

Lin said greater people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and the United States serve the interests of both sides and are supported and welcomed by people from all walks of life in both countries.

Noting that China is widely considered one of the safest countries in the world, Lin said China has effective measures in place to protect all foreign nationals.

"This isolated incident will not affect normal people-to-people exchanges between China and the United States," the spokesperson said.
