New Delhi: Industry body SEA on Wednesday reduced the country's rape-mustard seed production estimate to 11.58 million tonnes for the 2023-24 crop year, citing the impact of El Nino on key producing states.

In March, the Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA) had estimated rape-mustard seed production at 12.09 million tonnes.

Despite the decline, production is expected to exceed last year's 11.18 million tonnes, the association said in a statement.

The phenomenon of El Nino is marked by extreme heat waves and severe reduction in soil moisture during the ripening stage. This caused damage to the produce in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

The SEA said rapeseed-mustard production in Rajasthan, the top producing state, is now estimated at 4.53 million tonnes in the 2023-24 crop year (July-June), down from the earlier estimate of 4.61 million tonnes.

Similarly, production in Uttar Pradesh is expected to decline to 1.79 million tonnes, Madhya Pradesh to 1.60 million tonnes and Haryana to 1.17 million tonnes.

While the area under rye-mustard cultivation has increased by 5 per cent to 10.06 million hectares this year, the yield is expected to decline to 1,151 kg per hectare from 1,168 kg last year.

Mustard and mustard are the major oilseed crops grown during winter in the country.
