New Delhi [India], The Indo-Israel Center of Excellence for Mango at Talala in Gir Somnath district of Gujarat is providing training to farmers in high density mango plantation and cultivation, a method already used in countries like Israel and Australia. Is popular. A farmer can plant up to 400 saplings on one acre of land and earn up to Rs 4 lakh. VH Barad, SMS and horticulture officer at the centre, told ANI that high-density farming is a new concept in India but well established in Israel. Established in 2012 in collaboration with Israel, the center provides training to farmers to make them aware of the latest research in mango cultivation. According to Barad, high-density farming is more manageable and profitable than traditional methods. This involves rejuvenating trees by cutting them down to 10 feet by 40 feet and planting new trees in the interval. With this method one gets results within three years. “High-density farming can also make up for reduced production due to climate change. We can grow more plants in a smaller land. Pesticides can be maintained by pruning. This way, a farmer can get good exportable quality mangoes from high-density farming," he said. The center not only educates and trains farmers but also provides them mango saplings at subsidized rates. Last year it trained 3.5 thousand farmers and provided 25-30 thousand saplings. In addition to high-density mango plantations, farmers are also exploring exotic mango cultivation, with a focus on Miyazaki from Japan, Tommy Atkins from the US, and other breeds from Thailand and other countries.Sumeet Shamsuddin Jharia, a farmer from Sasan Gir in Gujarat, mentioned that he has collected around 300 varieties of mangoes, including foreign high-breed and traditional Indian breeds, in his farm. "Miyazaki mango is the most expensive variety which can cost between Rs 1000 to Rs 10000. It has good taste and turns red after being plucked. Farmers in Japan are able to pay framers prices ranging from Rs 2.5 to 2.75 lakh per kg. are encouraged." He said.He highlighted varieties like Miyazaki, which is known for its high price and taste, Tommy Atkins, which is diabetic-friendly due to its low sugar content. They also cultivate Maya mangoes, a top variety native to Israel. "We are planting these plants and then selling them to farmers. We also provide training to students in colleges," Sumeet said. Besides this, they provide training to college students and propagate disease resistant varieties like Sonpari developed by hybridizing Alphonso and Begampalli mangoes. In high-density mango plantations, plants are kept close to each other, and their height is maintained through pruning. Sumeet claimed that within three years, each plant matures and starts bearing fruits, potentially yielding an income of Rs 3-4 lakh from one acre.
