New Delhi: According to a source, IndiGo is in discussions with aircraft manufacturers to buy 10 small aircraft as the airline looks to strengthen its presence on regional routes.

The carrier, which recently ordered 30 wide-body A350 aircraft, is expanding domestic and international operations.

IndiGo plans to buy 100 small planes and is in discussions with some aircraft manufacturers, including ATR and Embraer, the source said on Tuesday.

While a final decision is yet to be taken, the broad plan is to place a first order of 50 aircraft and an option to buy 50 more such aircraft, the source said.

There was no comment from Indigo.

Currently, the airline has 45 ATRs in its fleet and each of them has 78 seats.

In April, IndiGo announced an order for 30 A350-900 aircraft and an option to purchase another 70 such aircraft.

In June last year, IndiGo had placed the largest single aircraft order by an airline for 500 aircraft with Airbus.

The outstanding order book for the A320 family aircraft is approximately 1,000, which is yet to be completed over the next decade. The order book includes a mix of A320 neo, A321 neo and A321 XLR aircraft.

IndiGo has an operational fleet of 355 aircraft. Apart from 45 ATRs, the carrier has 193 A320 Neo, 20 A320 CEO, 94 A321 and 3 A321 freighters.

IndiGo CEO Piet Albers said in April that the ambitious target was to double the size of the airline by 2030.
