Dharamshala, India's first 'hybrid pitch' was unveiled at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium in a grand ceremony here on Monday.

The event was attended by cricketing dignitaries including IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal and former England cricketer and SIS International Cricket Director Paul Taylor.

"After the success at iconic venues like Lord's and The Oval in England, the introduction of hybrid pitches is set to revolutionize cricket in India," said Dhumal, who hails from Himachal Pradesh.

The hybrid pitch, which combines natural turf with synthetic fibres, promises improved durability and consistent playability, reducing stress on ground staff and maintaining quality playing conditions.

With only 5% synthetic fibres, the pitch ensures that the natural characteristics essential for cricket are preserved.Taylor expressed his gratitude to HPCA for its support of this pioneering project.

"With ICC approval, we are excited to see the positive impact these pitches have on the game, starting with the installation in Mumbai and Ahmedabad," he said.

The 'Universal Machine', a key component in installing the hybrid surface, was developed by SISGrass in 2017 and has been instrumental in the rollout of similar pitches at county cricket grounds in England.

The innovation is in line with the ICC's recent approval of hybrid pitches for T20 and One Day Internationals, as well as plans to expand their use in four-day County Championships starting this year.

The integration of technologies such as Root Aeration System, SISAIR, underlines the commitment to enhancing the cricket infrastructure in India. This system improves the health and flexibility of the pitch, allowing players to benefit from better and safer playing conditions.
